History Lesson Part II

Amiche e amici di Thermos, è sempre un piacere aprire la trasmissione con pezzi incantevoli... come J. City di Tyondai Braxton, canzone figlia dei Settanta più evoluti e del post-punk di This Heat e XTC. Un brano molto diverso dal resto dell'album Central Market (Warp), nel quale pare di sentire l'anima giocherellona dei Battles flirtare con Stravinsky e Ravel, in generale una sorta di divertissement/volgarizzazione pop dei linguaggi della musica classica e contemporanea che sto ascoltando con molto piacere in questi giorni. E che dire di Feed, dal nuovo The Sound The Speed The Light (Matador) dei Mission of Burma? Ho sempre nutrito un grande amore per questa band di hardcore evoluto che nei primissimi Ottanta mostrò precocemente una cifra stilistica assolutamente originale ed influente. Se amate band dall'impatto emotivo come gli Husker Du dovete scoprire assolutamente questa formazione di Boston meno nota ma altrettanto valida ed ancora in splendida forma. A seguire ci siamo sparati O Katrina!, il vero e proprio inno di quei Black Lips che tanta grinta e buon umore ci hanno trasmesso giovedì scorso al Covo: ci sono momenti in cui il garage di questi quattro ragazzotti americani pare uscire direttamente da Nuggets. Stanno facendo proseliti persino in ambienti non sospetti: hanno stretto amicizia con GZA del Wu Tang Clan ed insieme hanno registrato una bella versione di The Drop I Hold che ci siamo sentiti a ruota. In tema di concerti la settimana in città è ricca di appuntamenti romantici con artisti che hanno fatto scuola e storia nei loro rispettivi ambiti: Tortoise all'Estragon venerdì sera (buon disco davvero il loro nuovo Beacons of Ancestorship); Martin Rev e Pan Sonic sabato sera al Locomotiv; Mike Watt degli immensi ed indimenticabili Minutemen si esibirà invece domenica e sarà accompagnato da due ottimi musicisti come Andrea Belfi e Stefano Pilia. A proposito di Minutemen vi consiglio di recuperare questo bellissimo documentario uscito un paio d'anni fa sulla storia della band ed intitolato We Jam Econo. Date un'occhiata al trailer. Eccoci a un nuovo appuntamento con il Thermos del mercoledì, quello di "polaroid". Il prestigio costa e bisogna proprio dire che Enzo e la Fagotta non badano a spese, soprattutto quando si tratta di gravare sulla bolletta telefonica della radio. Anche questa settimana, infatti, un paio di collegamenti preziosi ci hanno permesso di scoprire un sacco di cose sui lavoretti in casa e su quale caffè frequenta quel marpione del cantante dei Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Freedom Rhythm & Sound

Amiche e amici di Thermos, la principale novità di cui abbiamo parlato ieri sera è una doppia uscita tematica della Soul Jazz Records dedicata al jazz "rivoluzionario" dei Sessanta e Settanta. Rivoluzionario per almeno due motivi: da un punto di vista artistico, musicisti di grandezza immane come Art Ensemble of Chicago, Archie Shepp, Sun Ra, Max Roach e tanti altri hanno letteralmente modificato il panorama culturale mondiale creando forme e linguaggi realmente nuovi ed esaltanti; da un punto di vista politico, queste musiche hanno accompagnato e fatto da colonna sonora alle durissime ed orgogliose lotte sociali del movimento per i diritti civili dei neri afroamericani, e talvolta hanno costituito veri e propri manifesti rivendicativi di pari dignità, afrocentrismo, libertà di espressione, uguaglianza, liberazione dal colonialismo. Due uscite complementari dicevamo: un doppio cd antologico intitolato Freedom Rhythm & Sound, Revolutionary Jazz & the Civil Rights Movement 1963-82, corredato da splendide foto che ritraggono, tra gli altri, Martin Luther King, Mohammed Alì, Black Panthers; e poi uno spettacolare libro formato 12" x 12", dunque dell'esatta grandezza di un LP, intitolato Freedom Rhythm & Sound, Revolutionary Jazz Original Cover Art 1965-83, e dedicato proprio ai particolari, creativi ed originali artwork tipici delle copertine dei dischi jazz di quel periodo, qui riprodotti in ampie e curate stampe... inutile dire che è un piacere ineguagliabile sfogliare queste pagine dense di storia, arte e dischi magnifici da gustare o riscoprire. Consiglio personale: poiché in quest'opera non è citato, un disco del 1960 che precorre assolutamente i tempi e che vi obbligo a recuperare è il fondamentale ed epocale We Insist! Freedom Now Suite di Max Roach, con una divina ed insuperabile Abbey Lincoln alla voce.

(No More) Negative Thoughts

Una dimensione contemplativa quella in cui ci siamo calati ieri sera: una realtà parallela le cui caratteristiche portanti sono sottrazione e reiterazione. Apertura dunque non a caso affidata a Q-Tip, che nella sua elegante e grintosa A Million Times, tratta da Kamaal/The Abstract, canta "Te l'ho detto un milione di volte /ma tu lo rifai di nuovo / e continuerai a farlo". La voce di Tim Rutili dei Califone affonda come una lama di coltello nei nostri cuori, come nel caso di Evidence, magnifica dolce rarefatta ballad, come loro sanno fare, contenuta nel nuovo album All My Friends Are Funeral Singers (su Dead Oceans). In quanto ad intensità emotiva e doti interpretative non è da meno Rain Machine e la sua Smiling Black Faces. L'estasi mistica la raggiungiamo con due uscite in casa Drag City: Luminous Night, nuovo album dei Six Organs Of Admittance di Ben Chasny e God Is Good degli Om. Dopo la sequenza delle rispettive Bar-Nasha e Cremation Ghat I e II ho visto la Luce nelle tenebre e anche Dio mi è sembrato un po' più buono del solito. Psichedelia in entrambi i casi ma con diversi connotati: radici nel folk per Six Organs, solide basi nei Black Sabbath e nel kraut-rock per gli Om. Perfetto preludio agli undici minuti di crescendo ritmico di Toive, dall'ultimo lavoro di Vladislav Delay su Leaf intitolato Tummaa. Guardate il nuovissimo video relativo proprio a questo pezzo. In tema di raffinatezze abbiamo proseguito con la stupenda reinterpretazione di 3/4 Heart dei mitici Black Dog ad opera di quel grande artista che risponde al nome di Mark Pritchard, negli ultimi tempi associato soprattutto alle sue stupende produzioni con il moniker Harmonic 313. Come forse già sapete, nell'ambito di Recreated gli artisti Warp festeggiano i vent'anni della casa madre offrendo versioni differenti di pezzi composti da altri compagni d'etichetta e di qui dunque l'origine di questa e delle altre cover. In fatto di originalità uno che si batte bene è Shackleton: un equilibrato mix di techno e dub con suggestioni tribali ed industrial che abbiamo avuto la fortuna di godere sabato sera al Link per via di un inatteso turn-over con Martyn. Il suo nuovo Three Eps (su Perlon) è certamente uno dei migliori dischi che voi possiate ascoltare in questo momento in ambito elettronico. Le sue precedenti produzioni su Skull Disco lasciavano presagire ottime cose. E così è stato. La stessa misura e grazia è percepibile nell'inedito di Burial, Fostercare, contenuto in 5 Years of Hyperdub. Inutile esprimere opinioni sulla leggiadria, la delicatezza e la carica innovativa di questo artista: basti questo video bellissimo a colmare il gap dialettico. Restando in ambito dubstep l'epilogo è stato tutto per Lost, dal nuovo album Unbalance su Tectonic di 2562, le cui produzioni sono in genere piuttosto chirurgiche e silicee ma talvolta riescono ad emanare un calore cyborg etereo, come sapevano fare una volta gli Autechre. Meditate gente, meditate... alla prossima!
